Bedford Village, New York (NY)
10576

Distance to NYC: 45 Miles

Bedford, commonly known as
Bedford Village, is one of three hamlets located within in the Town of Bedford, NY.  A small charming village green is steeped in history, and has often been the set or backdrop for film, television and print advertising.  The original version of the film the Manchurian Candidate starring Frank Sinatra amongst others, had scenes shot in the village, "on the green".  The commons houses are all painted white with black shutters, keeping the New England charm, the stunning white steepled church is an architectural landmark as you head up the (22/172) Pound Ridge Road.  We have a first run movie theater with two screens, so if the film is released in NYC it opens here the same day!  There is a deli, two gourmet shops (one organic food only!),  a wine shop, clothing, a lovely library, antiques and of course, your local real estate agent, Prudential Holmes and Kennnedy

Bedford is home to Westmoreland Sanctuary, a 625-acre nature preserve with 8 miles of hiking trails, a variety of organized activities, environmental and educational programs.

Each of Bedford's hamlets has a town park with swimming and tennis, a library, shops and a volunteer fire company. The town supports the arts with concerts, art museums, galleries, lectures by well-known experts and family activities.

History
The Town of Bedford was founded on December 23, 1680 when twenty-two Puritans from Stamford, Connecticut purchased a tract of land three miles square known as the "Hopp Ground" from Chief Katonah and several other Indians for coats, blankets, wampum and cloth. Bedford was made a part of Connecticut in 1697 when a patent fixed the boundaries as a six-mile square and only when King William III of England issued a royal decree in 1700, to settle a boundary dispute, did Bedford became part of New York. Westchester County's oldest government building is the Court House in Bedford Village, which was built in 1787 and renovated in the 1960s.

Landmarks
Bedford has a few minor landmarks, most of them centered around the Bedford Green, a small patch of green space at the center of the historical district (along Route 22). The old one-room stone schoolhouse; and a few colonial-era houses, still lived in, which are kept painted white with black or green shutters. Also along Route 22, at Hook Road, there is a large 300 year old oak tree known as the Bedford Oak.

Schools and Educational Facilities
The town of Bedford is served by the Bedford School District.  There are five elementary schools, one middle school and one high school in the district; West Patent Elementary, Pound Ridge Elementary, Mount Kisco Elementary, Bedford Village Elementary, and Bedford Hills Elementary, Fox Lane Middle School and Fox Lane High School.  The hamlets of Bedford Hills and Bedford Village are also part of the Bedford Central School District.
